There was something really special about DIY building the front door! I don't know what it was exactly, but I think opening the front door is the first "touch" of the house you get, and it seemed very right to have it be done by the builder.
Besides getting to have a custom-size, we were able to have a custom-insulated door, with quite a robust R-value. Special glass was ordered in for the lights.
A late-night project.

We didn't have plans for the door-- my husband just did it himself. I can tell you a few things about it and hope it helps: the door is made up of 1x6 pieces over 1/4"plywood (front side and back side). Sandwiched between the plywood is a slab of rigid R6 insulation. Strips of wood make up the sides, and the window area. The glass is double pane ordered from the local glass shop. They are actual panes set in the wood. The door was made to fit exactly what we needed, and is QUITE heavy. We ordered architectural ball-bearing hinges for it.
